Blizzard joins these kids for some fun on the inflatables during St. Cloud's Fun Day last fall

  • Combine registration with fun summer events – Examples include a 5K run or walk, roller skating night on the rink (before ice is in), hosting a Fun Night with inflatable bounce houses and other games/activities.
  • Host an orientation night – create an opportunity for new parents to get to know board members, ask questions, get tips on the upcoming season and start developing relationships at the rink.
  • Develop Learn to Skate Programs– have coaches work with kids and make it a fun experience; talk with parents to answer questions; host a pizza party. Call participants a week after completion inviting them back.
  • Introduction to Hockey – Divide ice up for different levels. Utilize coaches who will give them a taste of hockey using fun drills and games. Add a theme, prizes, or an after party with snacks to increase interaction with the association and the quality of experience.

Santa made a special appearance in Dec. 2012 to help these STMA mites work on their skating

  • Entice first year players with reduced cost to participate, make it free (ex: Try Hockey For Free) or use other incentives such as bring a friend who joins and your fee is half price.
  • Consider making practices for a longer period of time and fewer nights per week, particularly after reaching the Peewee & Bantam age.
  • Create a consistent practice schedule.
  • Provide information on the Minnesota Hockey Rec. League to those who don’t want to play full time.
  • Spooky Skate – Whether it is a Try Hockey event or a typical mite practice, adding a theme provides a little extra fun for players. Encourage all of the kids to wear costumes over their hockey gear and take part in a Halloween themed skate.
  • Santa Skate – Invite Santa to join a mite or beginner level practice during December. Play Christmas music and have Santa hand out candy canes. Then, follow up the skate with hot chocolate and a Secret Santa gift exchange.
