Edina Black 12U B
Season Recap
Edina 12U B Black consisted of 15 super competitive skaters, and two amazing goalies. The team received excellent coaching from head coach Tom Ewers and assistants Kerry Wethington, Tom McConnell, and Jeff Bisson, and was supported by an awesome group of parents, siblings, grandparents, aunts and uncles.
The season was one of great success but also high drama thanks to intense rivalries with a number of excellent 12U B metro-area teams. We enjoyed some good-natured social media banter with Stillwater 12U B1 Black, one of the few teams at our level that also had its own Twitter account! The Ponies beat us in an early-season scrimmage at Mariucci Arena, but our girls soon evened the score as we defeated them in the championship of the Edina Cake Eater Classic. The rubber match couldn’t have been on a bigger stage, as the teams met at Regions in Fairmont. Edina jumped out to a three-goal lead in the first period, but Stillwater, the top-ranked team in the state most of the season, clawed its way back to within one goal with just seven minutes left in the game. Edina held on to win, though, advancing and eventually winning Regions.
We also had an epic season series with west-side rivals Minnetonka 12U B Black, facing them eight times in 2019-20. Edina was 6-1-1 vs Minnetonka, but the Skippers were always tough as nails. They beat us in the quarterfinals at Districts, so we ended up having to beat them twice in order to advance to Regions. The girls also had to overcome none other than Minnetonka to win the East Region championship.
Edina 12U B Black finished with a 42-3-2 record, taking 3rd at the Duluth Icebreaker, and winning the Cake Eater, Centennial SuperChill, the OMGHA Cabin Fever, District 6 Playoff, and East Region tournaments. Even better than trophies and medals, though, these girls will take from this season the confidence and satisfaction they gained by working together to overcome early in-game deficits and a few very tough losses.
