Andover 12U A

Season Recap

The 2019-20 Andover Huskies 12UA team was made up of very special players who always worked hard on and off the ice throughout the summer. Heading into the season, there was a lot of expectations on this team, but the girls were up to that challenge.

The season started with a weekend of scrimmages including games against OMGHA, Edina, and Woodbury.  All great youth girls’ programs, but the girls rose to the occasion early and started the season 3-0.  After the first weekend, the girls went on to win an additional 26 straight games, including winning the YHH Danglefest and Woodbury Sweetheart Tournaments before getting their first blemish on their record with a 2-2 tie during the Fargo Scheels Girls International pool play. This tie was an awakening the team needed as they won the next 15 games, including winning the Fargo Tournament and District 10 Tournament championships.

The Huskies were placed in the West Region bracket, which was made up of many of the other top 10 teams in the state.  Only two teams from Regions would make it to State, so the team knew it would be a tremendous challenge even though they had been unbeaten in the previous 45 games.  After winning the first Region game, the Huskies ran into a familiar top-tier opponent in Alexandria.  Unfortunately for the Huskies, it wasn’t their day and had the first loss of the season, losing 2-3. Thankfully, the season wasn’t over, and this was a catalyst for the rest of the Regions. The girls finished Regions with three more wins, including a rematch with Alexandria for the second spot to state.  The Huskies came to play, winning 8-0 and earning their spot to the State Tournament.

Unfortunately for this special team and all the other teams who made it to State, they didn’t get to finish what they worked so hard for due to COVID-19. Although everyone was heartbroken, the team held their heads high knowing they played great all year. The Huskies 12U A team ended the season with an overall record of 48-1-1 and outscored opponents 302-26. 30 of the 50 games were shutout performances by goaltender Layla Hemp and overall team defense in front of her.

A special thanks goes out to the coaches, parents, family and friends who provided support throughout the season. The girls are already working hard at their homes in preparation for next season. Wishing everyone health and safety as we hope hockey is opening again soon!
