2023-24 Rec League Details

AGE DIVISIONS: The Minnesota Hockey Recreation League ("Rec. League") plans to offer five age divisions (10U, 12U, 14U, 16U & 18U) for the 2023-24 season.   All divisions will be NO-CHECK and are co-ed. The Rec. League reserves the right to move players up and down according to their skill level. For more details on age level eligibility, click here

COST:   $335 (+$61 or $70 USAH fee) based on age level.  Cost will include 22-24 hours of ice, referee fees, USA/MN Hockey fees, liability/excess medical insurance, game jersey/socks and an end of the year festival.  There is NO fundraising requirement. 

*Full-time goalies pay only $150 plus the USA/MN Hockey Registration fee ($61/70) for a total of $211 or $220.

GAME/PRACTICE SCHEDULE:  Starting in January, each 10U & 12U team will average one practice and one game per week.  The 14U age groups will have a more game-heavy schedule for a total of six practices and 14 games.  The 16U & 18U age groups will have two practices and 16 games. The season will conclude in March with a year end festival.  No ice sessions will be held on Wednesday nights or before noon on Sundays.

TEAM LOCATIONS:  Rec League teams are generally formed by geographical location to minimize travel.  Teams will typically practice near their home location. In the past, there have been teams located in each area of the metro (NE, NW, SW and SE), but there may be some travel involved for games.

FRIEND REQUESTS:  Players in the Rec League have the option to request to play on the same team of their friends, even if that means playing on a team in a different area of the metro.  This request must be included in your registration and submitted prior November 1st. 

REGISTRATION:  Players may register online for the Rec League starting in September.  Registration deadline is November 1st, after which a $50 late fee will be applied and players may not be eligible for friend requests. 

RULES: The Rec. League operates under USA Hockey Official Rules for Ice Hockey, as modified by Minnesota Hockey. In addition, the Rec. League has adopted the following modifications of its own.

  • Teams will be provided a five minute warm-up prior to starting each game.
  • Games will be one full hour of ice time. Following the warm-up, there shall be a three period running time game. The first two periods shall be 17 minutes in length. The length of the third period will be determined by the amount of time remaining.
  • The last minute of all games will be stop time. 
  • There will be no overtime periods or shootouts.
  • All penalties will be two minutes in length (running time) with the offending team playing shorthanded during that time.
  • The Rec League does not allow checking at any age level.
  • Three Penalty Game Disqualification Rule - If any player receives three penalties in the same game, he/she will be removed from that game but will maintain his/her eligibility for the next game.
  • Inclement Weather Policy - If the arena is open, all practices and games will be held as scheduled.
