The Minnesota District of USA Hockey announced today that Derrick Brown has been named Associate Coach-in-Chief (CIC) for Minnesota Hockey District 5. Brown will lead the implementation of USA Hockey’s Coaching Education Program and provide development opportunities for youth hockey coaches in the District 5 area.

Brown served as the Associate CIC for District 4 from 2010-2015 during his time coaching at Luverne High School before moving to St. Cloud. Over the course of six seasons at Luverne, Brown compiled a 122-36-5 career record, was named Section 3A Head Coach of the Year three time and earned the honor of Minnesota Class “A” Coach of the Year in 2014 after leading Luverne to its first-ever state tournament appearance.

In 2015, Brown became the head boys’ hockey coach at St. Cloud Cathedral High School. With Brown’s leadership, the Crusaders have made back-to-back trips to the Minnesota State Class A High School Hockey Tournament, finishing 5th in 2016 and 3rd in 2017.

Brown returns to the CIC staff with a history of showing leadership in developing youth hockey coaches and players. In addition to his involvement in the CEP program and high school level, Brown has coached at every level of the CCM High Performance programs, and his continued dedication to youth and high school hockey has earned Brown awards from USA Hockey (New Young Leadership Award) in 2014 and the Minnesota Hockey Coaches Association (Dave Peterson Award) in 2016.
