Boys 16/17 Final 54: Day 1

17: Red vs. white

Teams Red and White kicked off the Final 54 tournament with a high scoring game that seemed to set the pace for the tournament.  Fourteen minutes into the first half, White's Luke Loheit (Minnetonka) dumped in the first goal of the game.  Jack Bayless (Minnetonka) quickly answered back, 3 minutes later, putting team Red on the board and tying the game.  Both teams would finish the last minute of the first half with goals that would leave the game tied at 2; Grant Docter (Minnetonka) scored for Red with 0:51 answered quickly by a goal from White's Hunter Olson (Bemidji) at 0:10 to tie the game back up.  

The second half brought an additional 5 goals; Red's Bayless came out scoring in the first five minutes of the final half, giving Red the lead.  White closed the gap three minutes later with a goal by Luke Mountain (Shattuck) to tie the game at 3.  In the end, it was Red that would take the game, scoring the final three goals and increasing their lead to a final score of 6-3.  Isaac Henkenmeyer-Howe (Moorhead) scored at 14:27, followed by two goals within a minute by Ryan Brandt (Maple Grove) at 5:04 and Nicholas Portz (St. Cloud) at 4:34.

17: red vs. Blue

The second 17's game of the day continued the momentum of the first and racked up a total of 8 goals.  Team Red proved to be "red hot" as they came out dominating the first half.  Benjamin Doherty (Alexandria) came out scoring in the first two minutes of the game, followed by Zachary Zemlak (Lakeville South) at 15:53, Parker Larson (Moorhead) at 6:40, and rounded off by Hunter Paine (Duluth East) at 3:51.  Blue's Laudon Poellinger (La Crescent) dumped one into the net with less than a minute left in the half to put Blue on the board. 

The second half saw two goals in the first 5 minutes of play.  Blue's Landon Langenbrunner (Cloquet) scored at 21:05 only to be matched by Red's Colin Schmidt (Wayzata) thirty seconds later.  George Grannis (Duluth Marshall) closed out the game for Red and increasing their lead to a final score of 6-2.

17: White vs. blue

Blue and White closed out the night with the highest scoring game of the day; a total of 11 goals between the two teams.  White's Andrew Stoneman (Shattuck) would put up the first goal of the game at 17:30.  Blue would rally back with the next four goals; all of which would be scored in a minute and a half.  Chase Foley (St. Thomas Academy) scored at 13:43, Bryce Brodzinski (Blaine) would follow at 13:34, Payton Matsui (St. Thomas Academy) scored on a penalty shot at 13:02, and was quickly followed by another goal by Elliot Peterson (Hermantown) at 12:24.  White's Ian Mageau (Duluth East) dumped in another goal at 10:15, closing the gap to 4-2.  Blue continued their domination closing out the first half with two additional goals; Xander Lamppa (Rochester JM) would score at 7:23 and teammate Brodzinski would score his second of the game and close out the half at 5:18. 

White came out fighting back in the second with a goal by Luke Loheit (Minnetonka) 15 seconds into the half.  Teammate Blaine Warnert (Chaska) would rack up another point for White with a goal at 14:15.  Ultimately, Blue would finish out the game on top with a goal by Jake Seitz (Virginia) at 2:38 making the final score 7-4.

16: Blue vs. white

Final 54 16's also brought three high scoring games to the tournament for the first day.  Blue's Jacob Braccini (Buffalo) would go on to score the tourney's first hat trick putting up his first goal at 23:27.  It would not be until a minute into the second half that White's Matthew Gleason (Cretin Derham Hall) would answer back, tying the game at 1. Braccini scored goal two for team Blue at 17:53 and was again answered by White's Gleason at 11:58.  White would take the lead for the first time in the game with a goal by Benjamin Stucker (St. Thomas Academy) at 5:53.  Braccini would score the final goal of the game and the final goal needed for his hat trick at 2:19, making the final score a tie game at 3.

16: Red vs. Blue

Game 2 of the Boy's 16 HP Final 54 tourney also would start with just one goal in the first half; Garrett Pinoniemi (Delano) scored at 7:47.  Following suit of the rest of the tournament, 6 goals were put on the board in the second half. Blue's Joseph Quast (Hill Murray) tied the game at 18:39. Blue would go on to score the next three goals; Nicholas Vega (St. Thomas Academy) at 15:51, Shane LaVelle (Chaska) at 15:33, and finally Quast with his second goal of the game at 9:45.  Red would rally back and attempt to close the gap with goals by Mason Nevers (Edina) and Casen Richels (Blaine).  Ultimately, Red would come up short a goal and Blue would go on to win the game with a final score of 4-3.

16: white vs. red

The final game of the Boy's 16 Final 54 tourney for day 1 saw a total of 8 goals.  Midway through the first half, both teams fought back and forth to take the lead; Benjamin Troumbly (Greenway Bantam A) would put up the first goal of the game for team White at 6:48.  Red would answer back with the next three goals of the half; Brady Baker (Hermantown) at 6:38, Garrett Pinoniemi (Delano) at 2:28, and Charlie Schoen IV (Andover) at 2:09.  White went on to tie up the game with two goals in the final two minutes of the half.  Troumbly scored his second goal of the game at 1:30 and was quickly followed by teammate Matthew Gleason (Cretin Derham Hall) at 0:23 to close out the first half 3-3. 

White came out hot and ready to finish the game on top, scoring the only two goals of the second half.  Teddy Lagerbach (Minnetonka Bantam AA) scored at 21:48.  Six minutes later, at 15:09, Mack Motzko (St. Cloud Cathedral) would finish the game, dumping another goal in the net and giving White the final lead of 5-3.
