Minnesota will be well represented at USA Hockey’s Tier 1 National Championships, which are set to begin Thursday, April 6 at sites across the country. Seven teams from Minnesota — one at each level of competition – will represent the Minnesota District at the tournaments.
The Minnesota Green Giants (Youth 15) and Minnesota Lakers (Girls 14U) will make their first appearance at USA Hockey’s National Championships, becoming the first-ever representatives from the CCM Minnesota Hockey High Performance Tier 1 Leagues. The CCM HP Tier 1 Leagues were a key component of the new framework for Tier 1 hockey in Minnesota. The framework established a before/after structure for Tier 1 competition to allow for players to return to their association or high school teams.
Shattuck-St. Mary’s, which is recognized as the only in-season Tier 1 program in Minnesota, will send five teams to the National Championships, including four teams who enter among the top two seeds at their level. At last year’s championships, Shattuck-St. Mary’s claimed the national titles at the Youth 14U, Youth 16U, Girls 16U and Girls 19U levels. Shattuck-St. Mary’s Girls 16U team has won the past four championships and will look to extend their national title streak to five consecutive years.
