HP Seniors Pool Play

Team Royal (Section 2&6) - 4, Team Red (Section 1&3) - 1

Team Royal took the first game in the HP Seniors pool 4-1 over Team Red after a three goal scoring outburst in the final half.

Erik Evans scored the game’s opening goal for Team Royal after an assist from teammate Eric Worre two minutes in. Dan Sandvig replied four minutes later with a goal for Team Red, courtesy of Ryan Pearson and Thomas Klans who both notched assists on the tying goal. Both Nick Wienciek and Joshua Kenney were solid from there with Wienciek stopping 16 shots and Kenney turning aside 12.

Jarod Blackowiak dished the puck to Hunter Johannes who gave Team Royal a lead it never relinquished. Blackowiak added a goal of his own in the 17th minute of the half, and Ryan Murray finished Team Red off by finding twine with 6:10 left in the game, giving Team Royal a confident three-goal lead. Ryan Bielenberg earned a 10-save shutout in the latter half, while Reid Waszczenko stopped 14 of 17 shots he faced.

Team Gold (Section 7&8) - 4, Team Orange (Section 4&5) - 4

Neither Team Gold and Orange could get the better of the other in the final game on Friday, ending in a 4-4 draw.

Emmet Nath netted the first two goals of the game for Team Orange, but goals from Nate Horn and Jesse Jacques knotted the score at 2-2, despite a 15-6 advantage in shots for Team Orange. Kyle Haden stopped 13 of 15 shots for Team Gold, while Justin Evenson made four saves for Team Orange.

Ben Wahlin's goal 43 seconds into the second half regained the lead momentarily for Team Orange. Nick Lund replied just 11 seconds later to tie the game up again. Matt Jennrich scored late in the final period, giving Team Orange one last taste of victory before a Jacques' game-tying goal with 8:52 left in regulation.

Blake Habisch had assists on both of Jacques' goals. Cade McEwen and Bob Parenteau both had 11 saves apiece for their respective teams.

HP 18's Pool Play

Team Kelly (Section 2&6) - 7, Team White (Section 1&3) - 4

Team Kelly won the opening game of the Ted Brill Great 8 Festival 7-4 over Team White.

It took just 17 seconds for Team White to get on the board, as Blake Brandt buried a puck off a feed from Raymond Christy. Matthew Koethe leveled the score early, but two goals by Zachary Morse and Kasyne Kruse gave Team White what seemed to be a commanding lead. That was before the Griffen Ness and Ben Almquist show took over.

Almquist stepped around a defender and zipped a pass across the slot to Ness who fired a shot top shelf over Brooks Telecky with under five minutes left in the first half. The goal sparked a four-goal run by Team Green as Almquist and Ness notched assists on back-to-back goals by Justin Daly, just 31 seconds apart. David Burns capped the run by burying the puck in the slot on his backhand with 11 seconds remaining in the first half.

Team White tried to crawl back into the game with a goal from Tyler Johnson, but two goals by William Basill extended Team Kelly's lead. Linden Olness stopped 9 of 10 shots in the second half for Team Kelly. Almquist and Ness each tallied three points.

Team Purple (Section 7&8) - 7, Team Light Blue (Section 4&5) - 1

Team Purple closed the first day of the HP 18’s pool play with a 7-1 demolition of Team Light Blue.

Moorhead’s Cole O’Connell, Carter Randklev and Lance Leonard menaced Team Light Blue in the first half. O’Connell distributed assists on Nathan Poolman and Willy Stauber’s goals, Randklev netted a goal of his own with the help of Garrett Sandberg and Leonard stopped all eight shots he faced, including a breakaway chance in the latter minutes.

Michael Heitkamp lit the lamp at the two-minute mark of the second half with O’Connell and Randklev tallying assists on the play. Aaron Myers and Evan O’Conner stretch Team Purple’s lead to six goals before Joey Petronack foiled Team Purple’s shutout bid with 6:52 remaining. Alex Verbout put the finishing touches on the rout by pushing a puck through Jacob Toensing. Toensing stopped 32 of 36 shots in the final half, while Matt Fitzgerald denied 28 of 29.
