Congratulations to Dena Walters of the Sartell Youth Hockey Association (“SYHA”) on being named Total Hockey Volunteer of the Month! Walters has served in a variety of roles with SYHA and is currently serving as President.

Walters got started with SYHA as the association’s Girls Coordinator when her daughter, who is now on the high school team, was on the Girls 10U team in Sartell.

“I kind of grew up in the hockey world,” said Walters. “My dad was the president of the Brooklyn Park hockey association when I was younger. When I saw the girls program needed some help, I figured it was my turn to give back and try to make a positive impact.”

Since then, Walters has gradually become more and more involved. She spent time as the Mite Coordinator and as Vice President before becoming the President this season. Four years ago, she also volunteered to help at the district level, taking on the role of District 5 Girls Coordinator. Fast forward to today and Walters is still active on the District 5 board, serving as both Girls Coordinator and Secretary.

“You won’t find many people more involved in hockey than she is,” said Steve Gapinski, District 5 Director. “She’s done some great work with Sartell at the local level and her dedication to doing things the right way has been a huge asset for the entire district.”

Throughout her time volunteering, Walter has placed an emphasis on treating people with respect and focusing on the big picture of youth sports in order to create an environment people are excited to be a part of. At the end of the day, it’s all about, “trying to make a difference in people’s lives,” said Walters.

Minnesota Hockey and Total Hockey would like to thank Dena for everything she’s done to create a positive youth hockey experience for players in Sartell and throughout District 5!  It is volunteers like Dena across our state who make community hockey in Minnesota so special.
