Symposium to Provide Development and Networking Opportunities for Leaders in Player Development

Minnesota Hockey announced today it will offer a weekend conference for hockey association player development leaders. The conference, which is designed to provide training and best practices for executing world class youth hockey skill development programs, will be held April 22-23 at the Marriott Minneapolis West in St. Louis Park, MN.

The event will provide attendees with the knowledge and experience necessary to create a competitive setting that fuels skill development over a season, and ultimately, through a player’s hockey career.

Participants will arrive with their own association’s background: their unique set of circumstances, their association goals and challenges. On Sunday, April 23, they will leave with a better understanding of long term player development, insights on how to improve their current programs and examples of programs or ideas from throughout Minnesota, including the opportunities and challenges they present.

"This event provides a tremendous opportunity for our associations to learn how to maximize the positive impact they have on each player," said Dave Margenau, Minnesota Hockey President.  "For years, we have provided education for our coaches, but this conference takes that effort one step further by providing education and resources for leaders who guide player development decisions and programs in their association.  In addition to hearing from national experts, the event will allow attendees to network with other association leaders and learn from each other.”

The conference will feature presentations from local and national youth hockey development experts, on-ice demonstrations, workshop sessions among the directors themselves and interactive Q & A panels.  Speakers are set to include USA Hockey’s American Development Model (ADM) technical director Ken Martel, ADM goaltending manager Phil Osaer, Wildcats Hockey (Riverside, CA) president Ben Frank and more.

The topics of the conference sessions will progress from the scientific foundation of player development principles to the application of those principles to real-world hockey programs and common challenges.

“We are thrilled to bring Minnesota’s Hockey Directors and key members of their hockey development committees together in one place,” said Andrew Shriver, Chair of Minnesota Hockey’s Hockey Director Program. “There is so much hockey training that is being done well in Minnesota and across the country that all associations will benefit by sharing the best of what we do. This kind of collaboration helps associations build upon their own success, by learning from the success and evolution of each other’s programs.”
