The safety of its participants is of paramount importance to USA Hockey and Minnesota Hockey.  This includes not only on-ice safety, but also off-ice safety in any part of Minnesota Hockey’s programs. The USA Hockey SafeSport Program plays a key role in protecting all participants, not just players, from any type of misconduct or abuse.

One of the most exciting aspects of the USA Hockey SafeSport Program is the free online training/education, which was produced by United States Olympic Committee, that is available to help our members become aware of the information necessary to help prevent abuse from occurring in our sport.

USA Hockey requires SafeSport training for all coaches, referees, volunteers who have managerial or supervisory duties within a local program (such as association board members) and anyone else who has regular, frequent and routine access or contact with kids. In some cases, that may include parents who volunteer to be locker room monitors.

Here are a few helpful hints for everyone that is either interested in or required to complete the online training.

  1. The online training is free.
  2. The initial training session takes approximately 90 minutes to complete, and it does not need to be completed in one session.
  3. SafeSport training is valid for two seasons. If you initially took the training two years ago (2013-14 season), you must now complete the SafeSport refresher course which takes about 35 minutes to finish.
  4. All coaches must fulfill their SafeSport requirements before taking the ice with their team.
  5. Everyone must use their own USA Hockey membership number to complete the training.  Volunteers, coaches and referees attempting to use their child’s membership number will NOT satisfy their SafeSport training requirements.
  6. Volunteers (board members, locker room monitors, etc.) can secure a FREE 2015-16 USA Hockey membership number through the Manager/Volunteer registration located at www.usahockeyregistration.com.

USA Hockey and Minnesota Hockey have a ZERO TOLERANCE policy for abuse and misconduct. Through the USA Hockey SafeSport Program, USA Hockey and Minnesota Hockey are committed to creating the safest possible environment for participation in hockey.
