Happy Mother's Day to all of Minnesota's Hockey Moms!

Moms wear many different hats. Hockey moms wear a million.

There’s something extra special about hockey moms. They’re like superheroes, conquering all that’s tossed their way in a moment’s notice. From the icy roads to the stinky gear and freezing-cold rinks, thanks for all that you do.

In celebration of Mother’s Day, we gathered up a few tips for hockey moms, from hockey moms.

Karen Backes: Mom to David, St. Louis Blues, Minnesota State University, Spring Lake Park Youth Hockey Association

“If your player makes a mistake, recognize it and move on. Remember, it is the next shift that is important – make the best of it!”

“Stress to your player that hard work pays off. You need to work for everything you get.”

“Enjoy their time playing. It only lasts so long.”

Lisa Mackeben: Mom to Jack, Peewee in Champlin Park Youth Hockey Association

“If you find a way to rid the stink, you are mom of the year. Share your secret with others!”

“Hockey is a sport your child loves to play. Don’t let it be all they love or let it define them completely.”

“If it’s your first year, make a list of all the equipment that needs to be in your child’s bag. It will help when packing up to make sure no one is missing a glove, water bottle or skate.”

“Enjoy the moment now and don’t focus too much on the future. As long as your child enjoys the game, continue to support him or her.”

Terri Morrow: Mom to Justin, junior goalie at Big Lake High School

“Have a rink survival bag for younger siblings – things to keep them entertained like books, snacks, etc.”

Jeri Nelson: Mom to Brock, New York Islanders, University of North Dakota, Warroad Youth Hockey

“Keep it fun. The years go by fast, be sure to take something positive from every practice and game, win or lose.”

Karen Leciejewski: Mom to Tyler, Mite in Centennial Youth Hockey Association

“Have extra everything in the car. He/she will forget something and it will probably be when you’re running late and an hour from home.”

“Make sure your Mite uses the bathroom every time before you put all of his pads on. He will have to go as soon as you finish getting him ready.”

“Don’t complain unless you’re willing to step in and do a better job.”

Kate Nightengale: Mom to Jack, Peewee in Champlin Park Youth Hockey Association

“Keep a stick of deodorant in the car that transports your player – and make sure it gets used.”

Kathy Brodzinski: Mom to Jonny, Michael, Easton and Bryce, St. Cloud State University, University of Minnesota, Blaine High School, Blaine Youth Hockey Association

“Always be more proud of your child off the ice than on the ice. Everything else will fall into place.”

“Love them more than you love the game.”

“When they ask you to play goalie, don’t! Train the dog to do it.”

Kathy LaCasse: Mom to Matt, senior forward at North St. Paul High School

“It’s not your job to stress about what team, line or position your kid plays. Instead enjoy every moment of watching them on the ice. It will truly be over before you know it.”

Jill Gardiner: Mom to Jake and Max, Toronto Maple Leafs, University of Wisconsin, Penn State University, Minnetonka Youth Hockey Association

“The secret to success is keeping it fun. There’s a constant challenge at all levels from youth to pros, but always keep it fun and remind them that’s why they play.”

“Players are the most creative when they are on the pond with their buddies.”

“Don’t take it too seriously and don’t ever let your player lose that love for the game.”
