Head Amateur Scout for the New York Islanders, Trent Klatt discusses the current state of hockey culture and its impact on player development.

The New York Islanders won more games (47) this season than they had since the 1983-84 season. One of the main reasons why was the contributions of five Minnesotans. Four of those Minnesota natives finished this season in the top eight for scoring on the team.  The final one is Trent Klatt, who as the organization’s Head Amateur Scout, played an important, albeit less direct, role in forming the team’s current roster.

Klatt, an Osseo, MN native and 1989 Mr. Hockey winner, was invited to speak at the 2015 Minnesota State High School Hockey Tournament banquet.  Over the course of approximately 30 minutes, Klatt shared stories and insight on what it really means to play hockey at “the next level”.  Klatt also discussed the current culture of youth and high school hockey including the topics of moving up early, single sport specialization, playing year round and the quality of coaching in Minnesota.

Players, parents and coaches alike can benefit from Klatt’s unique perspective on player development.
