A Special Thank You for Local Volunteers

This past weekend over 400 teams participated in youth hockey tournaments across more than 25 Minnesota communities. With tournament programs, game management, concessions, apparel, and numerous other tasks being completed for each tournament, thousands of volunteers traded crowded malls and shopping centers on Black Friday in for cold rinks, hot coffee and smiling faces.

Thanksgiving tournaments are a great example of the impressive feats volunteers pull off each youth hockey season, and that’s just one weekend!  There is no doubt the great volunteer base here in Minnesota is the backbone of the State of Hockey and our community based model.

But too often we take them for granted.  In most cases, it isn’t because of a lack of appreciation. It’s due to a lack of knowledge about what a team manager or youth hockey board members actually does each season. As November’s Volunteer of the Month mentioned, “there’s so much more to it than you realize” until you get involved yourself.

The good news is you don’t need an in-depth understanding of what they do to recognize the efforts of your local volunteers.  Any thank you, big or small, is often appreciated by the people who selflessly dedicate so much of their time.

If you want to go the extra mile, ask around about who the most active people in your association are and nominate them for the Total Hockey Volunteer of the Month. The monthly award is a cooperative effort between Minnesota Hockey and Total Hockey to recognize volunteers for their hard work by giving back to them.

“We honor those volunteers who are role models for our kids; working tirelessly to give them the tools to be the best on the ice and in their community,” says Katy Benoit of Total Hockey.  “Whether they are parents, coaches, or lifelong players or fans - these are the folks who deserve recognition for keeping hockey thriving in our communities. Thank you!”

Do you know someone in your association that deserves to be recognized as the Total Hockey Volunteer of the Month? We bet you do! To nominate them now, follow the link below.

Each Volunteer of the Month receives a certificate recognizing their hard work and a $100 Total Hockey gift card to use online or in the store. They will also be featured in the Minnesota Hockey Newsletter, Let’s Play Hockey and on the Minnesota Hockey website. Nominators will receive a $50 Total Hockey gift card.
