Nationwide Event is Part of Fourth Annual Come Play Hockey Month

St. Paul, MN – November 4, 2014 – For the fourth consecutive year, Minnesota Hockey will be participating in USA Hockey’s Try Hockey For Free Day with 70 events scheduled at rinks around the state on Saturday, November 8. The events are designed to welcome boys and girls, ages 4 to 9, to come to a local rink and try youth hockey free of charge.

On November 2, 2013, 74 Minnesota sites hosted a Try Hockey For Free Day event and a total of 1,863 participants were reported. Both of those numbers were not only records for Minnesota, but set the bar for the entire country. Minnesota Hockey saw a 13% spike in new players at the 8 & Under level.

“Youth hockey has seen tremendous growth in recent years by introducing new kids to the game,” said Pat Kelleher, assistant executive director of development for USA Hockey. “Thanks to the support of the NHL and the outstanding work of local volunteers, thousands of families will enjoy their first youth hockey experience during Try Hockey For Free events on Saturday.”

Equipment will be provided for children attending Try Hockey For Free Day and no experience is required to participate. Nordy, the Minnesota Wild mascot, will be dropping into St. Croix Recreation Center to say hello to future members of the Stillwater and Mahtomedi Youth Hockey Associations.
