There were 15 players with Minnesota ties selected in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft held in Philadelphia on June 27-28. Minnesota Hockey congratulates all of them on this achievement and wishes them the best of luck in the coming years as they continue to work towards their dream of playing in the NHL!
Minnesota’s 15 picks in this year’s draft represents over 23 percent of the total Americans selected, as the U.S. had its most successful year since 1991 with 65 players taken in the 2014 NHL Draft. With 146 selections over the past ten years, youth associations in Minnesota continue to be leaders in the U.S. at helping kids develop a passion for hockey that assists them in reaching their full potential through its unique development model.
The early rounds of this year’s draft showcased the strength and depth of Minnesota’s community model as several players were selected from outside of the state’s most well known programs. Jack Dougherty (2nd – Nashville) grew up playing hockey in Cottage Grove. Ryan Collins (2nd – Columbus) and Jack Glover (3rd – Winnipeg) were on the same St. Louis Park team when they won the 2011 Bantam A State Tournament. Players were also selected from the communities of St. Cloud, Forest Lake, Chaska Chanhassen and Andover.
There was a flurry of Minnesotans taken off the board in the later rounds, including a two pair of teammates. Six players were taken in a span of 15 picks in the fifth round, including a series in which Luc Snuggerud (Chicago) and Edina teammates Tyler Nanne (New York Rangers) and Miguel Fidler (Florida) were selected in three consecutive picks. Steven Spinner, Snuggerud's teammate at Eden Prairie, Omaha (USHL) and eventually the University of Nebraska Omaha, was taken by Washington in the sixth round.
