Burnsville’s Walstad Honored with Ted Brill Award

Minnesota Hockey established the Ted Brill Award with great respect and fond memories of one of our most influential leaders.  It is presented annually to an individual who has at least ten years of service to any of the various player development programs (STP, HEP, HighPerformance/Selects, High School All-Star Series, etc.).

Certain people are just meant to be coaches. In Minnesota, we’ve been blessed with some of the best at all levels of hockey. Fortunately for the young hockey players in our state, these coaches tend to stick around and give up the majority of their free time to stand behind benches in cold arenas in support of kids.

Some, like Kenny Walstad, stand behind those benches for 48 years.

Making his mark in the South Metro area, Kenny Walstad led generations of hockey players, helping shape them as people for years to come. Walstad spent 22 years with Eagan Youth Hockey, three years with Eastview and another 23 years with Burnsville. Walstad spent time at almost every level of youth hockey, but he devoted most of his time at the Bantam and Junior Gold levels, leading kids as they began their transition into adulthood.

“I loved every minute of coaching and working with kids,” Kenny said. “I have been blessed over the years with such great kids and great assistant coaches. I’ve made great friends along the way, not just among my fellow coaches but with parents too.”

Long known for being the first one at the rink with unparalleled dedication, Kenny has hung up the skates. But his influence on kids who are now coaches themselves will continue to live on.

We thank Kenny for his passion and commitment to our game, and our kids!
