Hot Shots: Weekly Award Winners for Dec. 30 - Jan. 5

With so many talented hockey players from Minnesota playing beyond high school, it can be hard to keep up with all of them. For that reason, Minnesota Hockey is proud to bring you this weekly recap of Minnesota players that are honored by the top junior, collegiate and professional leagues so that you can keep an eye on all of your former teammates, rivals and alumni.

December Goaltender of the Month

Jeff Jakaitis of the South Carolina Stingrays is the Warrior Hockey ECHL Goaltender of the Month for December. It is the second time Jakaitis has won the monthly honor this season after also winning in October, and the fourth time in his ECHL career, setting a new league record.

 Jakaitis went 6-0-0 with two shutouts, a 1.00 goals-against average and a save percentage of .966 in six appearances during December.

 The 30-year-old allowed two goals or less in each of his six appearances in the month, and three times made more than 30 saves in a game, stopping 33 shots in a 5-1 win at Orlando on Dec. 7, turning aside 40 shots in a 3-2 victory at Greenville on Dec. 27 and stopping all 38 shots he faced in a 2-0 win over Elmira on Dec. 31.

 Jakaitis is tied for the ECHL lead with 18 wins, while leading the league with a 1.53 goals-against average and a save percentage of .944. He is second in minutes played (1,334), third in saves (578) and is tied for second in shutouts (3).

 A native of Rochester, Minn., Jakaitis has appeared in 148 career ECHL games with South Carolina, Gwinnett, Charlotte and Columbia posting an overall record of 78-42-22 with 16 shutouts, a 2.43 goals-against average and a save percentage of .924. Jakaitis was the 2012 ECHL Goaltender of the Year while with Gwinnett, and tied the ECHL record with three consecutive shutouts from Dec. 17-28, 2011.

 Jakaitis has also posted a 5-3-1 record in 10 career American Hockey League games with Portland and Worcester.

Co-Forward of the Week

Tyler Sheehy, F, Waterloo Black Hawks

The Burnsville, Minnesota native led the Hawks to a pair of weekend victories, recording five points (2g, 3a).  On Friday night, he handed out a couple of assists, including one on the game-tying goal that forced overtime, in a 4-3 shootout win over the Fargo Force.  Saturday night, he lit the lamp twice and dished out another assist in a 6-4 win over the Dubuque Fighting Saints. His second goal held up to be the game-winner.  The three-point night equaled a season high and was his second multi-goal game over his last seven contests.  The 18-year-old is currently third on the team with 12 goals and tied for fourth in scoring with 24 points.

Goaltender of the Week

Collin Olson, G, Sioux City Musketeers

The 19-year-old backstopped the Musketeers to a pair of wins over the weekend, while turning out a 1.00 goals-against average and .968 save percentage in the process.  Making just his second appearance for the Musketeers, he stopped all 29 shots he faced in a 3-0 win over the Muskegon Lumberjacks on Friday.   It was the sixth shutout of his USHL career.  The 2012 NHL Draft pick of the Carolina Hurricanes then made 31 saves in a 4-2 win over Muskegon on Saturday.  Olson has won all three of his starts since joining the Musketeers, recording a 1.33 GAA and .960 SV% in that time.  The Apple Valley, Minnesota native has posted two shutouts in five total starts this season.
