A message on player development from Minnesota Hockey’s High Performance Director

As the High Performance Season kicks into gear this spring, it is important for all coaches, parents and players in Minnesota to receive the right direction and information.  Over the course of the next several weeks, we will try to provide you as a parent and hopefully, the player, important information that will help you feel confident and comfortable in the Minnesota Development Model, which over time has been proven to be the best in the country.

Why are we doing this? We have leaders in player development for many years, but we want stay the best and continue to lead the country in NHL, Professional and NCAA Division I players. To do that, we need to ensure every player in Minnesota reaches his or her potential.

Over the course of my time in the game, I have been in many different roles – Player, Head Hockey Coach, National Coach-In-Chief, Youth Player Development Director, National Camp Coach, Scout, Executive Director of the High School Coaches Association - and now Minnesota Hockey Reebok High Performance Director (Player Development).  One theme holds true in all of those positions: the coaches and parents want the same things for the player - the best development experience possible.  The problem is there is way too much information to sort through it all, and much of it is misguided!  With all of this NOISE, as I like to call it, parents and players miss out on what they are actually looking for.

We are going to use hockey experts to answer some of your tough questions and ensure you get the best possible information. We will relevant cover topics that help you provide that Positive Parent Push for your athlete, with the main focus being the Minnesota Development Model.

Here are just a few of the topics we will touch on:

  • What separates the High Performance programs from other showcase leagues or tournaments?
  • How do I get noticed by scouts?
  • Is it okay to say no?
  • What is difference between Major Junior & college hockey and which is best for my kid?
  • What is the number one key to my son/daughter reach his/her potential?
  • Should I stay or should I go?

Visit www.minnesotahockey.org for more information or go directly to minnesotahockey.org/highperformance for all of the details on this year’s High Performance programs. Local tryouts will be here before you know it so make sure you get up to speed as soon as possible.  If at any time you have questions, please feel free to reach out to me or the staff at Minnesota Hockey. They will get you in touch with the writers (experts) or me to assist anyway possible.

Thanks

Mike MacMillan
