The Minnesota Department of Health (“MDH”) released updated guidance for youth and adult sports on June 6. Below is a summary of the changes and how they impact hockey in Minnesota.

Update Summary
  • Outdoor activities may expand to pods of 25. Indoor activities still have a max of 10 people per pod, including coaches.
  • Sports have been assigned into categories of low, medium and high risk based on their ability to maintain social distancing, individual versus team sports, amount of shared equipment, ability to clean shared equipment between use and other risk factors.
  • Low risk sports such as individual tennis, individual running or golf have been approved to resume games without spectators. It is strongly encouraged that games should be held outdoors as much as possible.
  • Medium and high-risk sports have no major changes from previous guidelines. Guidelines are for a focus on skill development with no contact and no games or tournaments.
Minnesota Hockey Updates
  • Hockey has been initially classified as a high-risk sport and has no major changes. We will be working with the state of Minnesota to advocate hockey being classified differently.
  • Guidance for Phase 1 from Minnesota Hockey’s Return to Play Guidelines are still in effect.
  • Associations hosting only outdoor dryland sessions may increase the number in their groups to a maximum of 25 if they choose.
  • Please note adult hockey may resume according MDH and Minnesota Hockey Return to Play Guidelines. No games are permitted.
