McLain was a three sport athlete at Brainerd High School and scored 64 points for the Warriors his senior season.

McLain tallied two goals, one assist and a team-high plus-3 rating as Bowling Green went 1-0-1 in a non-conference series at Clarkson. His strike at the 11:31 mark of the second period Friday night erased a 2-1 deficit as Bowling Green skated to a 2-2 tie. McLain played a key role in Saturday night's 5-4 victory, helping the Falcons score twice in a 3:34 span of the first period. The freshman from Baxter, Minn. scored at the 14:12 mark and picked up an assist on fellow rookie Tyler Spezia's goal at 17:46.
